Stewart to help kick off Food Day Canada in Elora

Everyone is welcome to cook Canadian ingredients and share images and stories on Aug. 5, this year’s Food Day Canada.

The event “offers all Canadians a chance to join in one massive celebration in praise of our farmers and fishers, our chefs and researchers, and, above all, our home cooks,” officials say.

To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, Food Day Canada is calling all Canadians to show the world real Canadian cuisine is regional, multicultural and delicious, says event founder and Elora resident Anita Stewart.

“We’ve assembled and tasted our way through a list of 150 Canadian ingredients,” she said.

“Some obvious foods like flour of all sorts and tons of dairy products made the cut. But there are also dozens of local contributions.”

There’s also VQA wine and craft beers from coast to coast, a host of new distilleries and award-winning cheeses from small fromageries all across the nation.

“It’s a fun and personal shout-out to Canada’s producers,” she says.

As part of Canada 150, Restaurants Canada is inviting its 10,000-plus independent members to join the national party with locally inspired dishes.

“As the party flows across Canada from one time zone to another, the public can watch the posts to see what’s on the menu all across the land,” says Stewart.

On Aug. 5 Food Day Canada invites everyone to share their food stories on social media.

Tag food images on Twitter or Instagram with #FoodDayCanada or #CanadaISfood and it will appear on the FDC website.

A village celebrates

From 10am to 1pm on Aug. 5, vendors of the Elora Farmers Market at Bissell Park will join forces with Stewart to mark Food Day Canada, with local chefs offering a tasting event.

The Taste Local event includes five guest chefs who will be using all local food from the market. For $20 one can sample dishes from all five chefs (children accompanied by parents are free).

Stewart donated three copies of Canada: the Food, the Recipes, the Stories to be won for the best Instagram/Twitter posts with the two hashtags #fooddaycanada and #elorafarmersmarket.
