Armed robber steals cash from bank in Drayton on Aug. 1

The RBC branch here was robbed, reportedly at gunpoint, on Tuesday afternoon.

On Aug. 1 at about 4pm the OPP responded to a report of a robbery at the bank on Main Street in Drayton.

Shortly thereafter, as Advertiser staff arrived at the scene, several OPP vehicles were parked in front of the bank and witnesses were being interviewed by police.

An officer at the scene would not comment on the incident but an OPP press release later confirmed “a male wearing a disguise entered the RBC Bank with a weapon and stole an undetermined amount of cash.”

Police say the man left on foot eastbound on Main Street.

OPP spokesman Josh Cunningham would not confirm the weapon used in the robbery was a gun.

However, one woman at the scene said she was in the bank with her three small children when a man with a gun approached an adjacent teller.

The woman, who left quickly with her children, estimated the suspect is under 30 years of age.

Police have released photos of the robbery suspect, describing him as a white male with a thin build wearing a dark blue Montreal Canadiens ball cap, long khaki shorts, a grey T-shirt and a black bandana covering his face.

“The same suspect may be responsible for a bank robbery … in Milverton on July 25,” states an OPP press release.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a tip on-line at www.csgw.tips.

Previous robbery

The Drayton RBC was the scene of a similar incident on March 2, 2015.

In that robbery a lone male entered the bank,  presented a weapon, assaulted an employee and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The OPP investigation led to the arrest in December 2015 of an 18-year-old male, who was a minor at the time of the robbery.

He pled guilty in October  2016 to the Drayton bank robbery – plus three bank robberies in Toronto, one in Tavistock and one in St. Clements.
