Guelph-Eramosa council has acknowledged the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International by honouring the Rockwood Lions Club.
On July 10 Mayor Chris White presented the club with a certificate of recognition.
“We consider ourselves lucky to have our very own Lions Club in Rockwood,” White said. “Since 1972, this volunteer organization does whatever is needed to help our local community and the surrounding areas.
“From breakfast fundraisers, to roadside cleanups and events to conquer cancer, we consider ourselves fortunate to have the Rockwood Lions in our neighbourhood.”
Lions Club International has over 46,000 clubs worldwide and over 1.4 million members, White said, adding that over 159 million people have benefited from the club in the last 100 years.
“On behalf of council I would like to thank the Lions members who are here and of course the Lions members who are not for all the wonderful things they do in the community,” White said.
“And as we know service groups are becoming scarcer and scarcer and we’re very fortunate to have one that’s still young and vigorous carrying on and we just thought we would recognize you folks.”
Rockwood Lions president Bob Jestin, past president Ken McNab and Lions Kevin Marsh and Darryl Nichol, along with Lioness president Doris Ens, also added historical items to the township’s Canada 150 time capsule. The capsule will be buried on Aug. 3 at the Rockmosa Skatepark grand opening celebration.
