Another suspicious fire at vacant home in Erin

A third suspicious fire in two weeks in Erin adds to the growing list of suspicious fires across the county.

On July 7, Erin Hillsburgh and Rockwood fire stations responded to a structure fire on Sideroad 10 south of Erin village.

The residence was vacant and the fire that caused a lot of smoke is being treated as suspicious.

“The house had smoke out of all windows and out of the eaves,” said Ken Keeler, deputy fire chief in Erin.

Keeler said the fire was concentrated in the basement, first to second floor stairwell, the kitchen, second floor hallway and bedrooms.

“It was going pretty good,” he said.

“We did an interior attack with water, put the bulk of the fire out and then commenced to the overhaul phase of it, where we expose ceilings, walls, exposures and get out to  the end of the fire damage is until we determine that it’s 100 per cent out.”

Keeler said there were no injured reported and a damage estimated were not assessed at this time.

The OPP and the Erin Fire Department are investigating and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshall has been notified.

Third fire in Erin

This is the third fire in two weeks, with two fires on June 25 at vacant properties on the 3rd Line and Wellington Road 125.

These three fires add to the list of  17 other suspicious fires in Wellington County.

The other suspicious fires include:

– house fire on Sept. 24 on 16th Line in Mapleton;

– house fire on Oct. 14 on 3rd Line in Guelph-Eramosa;

– house fire on Oct. 19 on 3rd Line in Guelph-Eramosa;

– house fire on Oct. 28 on Arkell Road in Puslinch;

– vehicle fire, Oct. 30 at 481 Townline Road in Puslinch;

– vehicle fire on Oct. 31 on Sideroad 10 in Puslinch;

– sawmill fire on Nov. 16 on 6th Line in Centre Wellington;

– cabin fire between Nov. 15 and 17 on Wellington Road 29 in Guelph-Eramosa;

– barn fire on Dec. 5 on Fife Road in Guelph;

– the Everton mill fire on Jan. 19 on Wellington Road 49 in Guelph-Eramosa;

– shop fire on Feb. 3 on Highway 7 in Guelph-Eramosa;

– barn/house fire on Feb. 3 on Township Road 3 in Guelph-Eramosa;

– hay bale fire on Feb. 15 on 3rd Line/32 Sideroad in the Town of Erin;

– house fire on March 5 at 59 Queen Street in Morriston;

– debris pile on March 12 on the 1st Line of Wellington North;

– house fire, April 9 on Concession 2 in Puslinch;

– debris pile (from previous fire) on April 25 on Concession 2 in Puslinch.

Police are asking anyone with information about the fires to contact the Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
