Police looking for owner of loaded gun found near ball diamond

Police are looking for the owner of a loaded gun found near a local ball diamond.

On July 7 Wellington County OPP went to the area of the Ponsonby ball diamond in response to a social media post about a gun being found in the area.

“Officers went to the alleged area and were able to locate a loaded firearm,” police stated in a press release.

“The firearm has been secured for public safety and its history is being investigated. The OPP is actively searching for the owner of the gun.”

OPP officials also want to locate the “good Samaritan” who discovered the gun and tweeted about.

At 11:18pm on July 6 someone with the Twitter handle @Megan_Allore tweeted, “Rode my horse on the road tonight and she almost stepped on a gun thrown in the ditch. Across from Ponsonby ball diamond.”

A few minutes later the user tweeted, “Also, who throws a gun onto the side of a road, across from a park full of kids?”

Police are asking anyone with information about the gun or the person who tweeted about it to contact the Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Police are also reminding residents who discover such “a public safety concern” to immediately call 911.
