Harrison flood waters receding but boil water advisory, road closures remain in effect

Flood waters here have receded and most people are returning to their homes, but a boil water advisory is still in effect and several roads remain closed.

Early on June 24, one day after more than 100mm of rain caused the worst flooding in the Harriston area in decades, Town of Minto officials announced the Maitland River should "be closer to its normal channel" later in the day.

"Floodwaters have receded to the Young Street area, trailer park, and flood plain," officials stated in a press release, adding river flows remain high and the water is still moving fast.

Young Street remained closed on Saturday morning, as did several other roads, pending inspections.

"Members of the public are still to exercise extreme caution," town officials ststed.

"Some rural roads are not safe due to washouts and are still closed."

As roads open evacuated members of the public are able to return home except in the Harriston trailer park.

Town officials say those returning home should contact and electrician to ensure it is safe to turn the power on. The electrician will make arrangements with Westario for power to be reconnected. For natural gas inquiries, residents should contact Union Gas.

Starting at 8am, relief groups and Minto Fire began meeting with property owners with flood damage to record basic information and contact details. The town will be updating its website to provide a portal to submit contact information.

"All landowners with damage must first contact their own insurance company," officials say.

"If a landowner wants a building inspection they should advise Minto Fire or advise through the website portal. Information on potential relief programs will be made available next week.

"Water and sewer systems are being inspected by Town Public Works. The boil water advisory remains in effect. major sewage pumping station is yet to be on line after the electrical system was shut down due to flooding. A plan for collecting waste and debris is being developed will be communicated shortly.

"The Emergency Operations Centre continues to meet. Mayor Bridge thanked all emergency responders, Town staff, and community members for their tremendous cooperation during this event."
