The Rockwood library is the site of the Guelph-Eramosa Homegrown Art Show.
The artist exhibition was initiated by acting community programs coordinator Kim Coultis, who had run the program previously in Banff.
“It was developed being an art show that was grass roots and it included all different types of members of the community and so it was an opportunity for … professional and amateur artists to come together in one setting,” Coultis explained at the exhibit opening on June 1 in the Older Adult Centre at the Rockwood library.
When she took over a maternity leave for Melissa Biffis in Guelph-Eramosa, Coultis thought she could adapt her Homegrown Art Show idea to celebrate Seniors’ Month in June.
“I thought how great would it be to do a community art show and focus on our older adult residents … for senior’s month and showcase what great talent we have,” Coultis said.
There were 14 submissions for the show, which are currently installed throughout the Rockwood library and will be on display until the end of June.
All the artists are aged 55 or older and are from Guelph-Eramosa, with experience levels ranging from amateur to professional.
“It’s kind of a great opportunity to celebrate our seniors and you know the skills and talents that they have,” Biffis said.
“I think often they’re not recognized … and I think they bring a lot of value and experience and knowledge that we can learn from and use.”
Coultis said the Homegrown Art Show is one of the first events on which the township has partnered with the county library.
“(I’m) looking forward to Melissa doing more programming and partnering with the library and bringing together more community events in Rockwood,” Coultis said.
“I think that’s what it’s about.”
The art show opening on June 1 also marked Coultis’ last day at Guelph-Eramosa Township, but Biffis said the art show would likely run once a year.
“The response has been pretty positive so I think if something works it always makes sense to keep going,” said Biffis.
