This year is a big one for the Arthur Optimist Club.
Not only is it Canada’s 150th year since Confederation, but the local club is celebrating 50 years in the community.
That is why the club is planning something big.
The Arthur splash pad will be the newest addition to the Arthur Community Centre grounds, which already includes an arena, two ball diamonds, a pool, playground and pavilion.
Optimists and splash pad committee members Nick Hansen and Steve O’Neill say it’s a way to give back to Arthur.
“Every other community around us has one – Fergus, Elora, Palmerston,” said Hansen.
“People would drive to Fergus to use the splash pad … if we can build one in our community, it’d be nice to keep them there.”
The group has raised over $83,000 towards its $140,000 goal since October.
On May 1, ABC Recreation is expected to start working on the grounds and by May 5, the splash pad should be finished, explained O’Neill.
The splash pad will be wheelchair accessible and include fountains, buckets and other water features. The committee is also hoping to install sunshades, benches and landscaping that will cost about $35,000.
Wellington North township is expected to take over maintenance as well as water and hydro costs once the water park is up and running.
The Optimists are planning a grand opening for the park on July 1, during their Canada Day celebration weekend.
“You’re going to be able to bring your children, your family and friends from around the community that are going to be able to use this splash pad,” said Hansen.
“It’s neat to say that we worked together to build this for the community.”
O’Neill added it wouldn’t be possible without the work of volunteers.
“Things wouldn’t get done without volunteers in any small community I don’t think,” he said. “You won’t have much of a community if you don’t have volunteers.”
