The abandoned buildings on Alma Street in Rockwood are in the process of being demolished.
Robert Eilers, president and director of Vesterra Property Management Inc., confirmed the business owns the properties from 210 to 250 Alma St., as well as 204 Alma St. – and that all the buildings will be coming down this year.
With the exception of 210 Alma St., all the buildings are now vacated.
Eilers said the tenant in 210 Alma is welcome to stay in the home until the last minute.
“I’m not going to kick him out just out of principle,” Eilers said. “If we have any delays and he can stay until October, fine by me.”
The tenant is building a new house that will be ready this fall.
In addition to demolition, Vesterra Property Management Inc. is also moving forward with the necessary applications to both Guelph-Eramosa Township and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to get the ball rolling on the new commercial development.
“We will be doing our formal site plan application within the next couple weeks,” Eilers said.
“We have site alteration permits in with the MTO and we’re waiting for final approvals at the moment.”
Once the alteration permits are approved the business will be able “to do the fill, to do retaining walls, things such as that,” Eilers said.
They will be preparing the site for construction.
The company is also in the process of obtaining highway access permits.
Eilers said there is no confirmed date for plaza construction to begin and there are no confirmed tenants for the proposed five-building commercial development.
