Volunteers at the North Perth–North Wellington Branch of the Canadian Diabetes Association sadly announced last week the pending closure of the branch here.
“Over the years, the Canadian Diabetes Association has been decreasing its physical regional office presence,” states a Feb. 17 press release from the association.
“The reasons can be attributed to the growth of technology for donating and service delivery (e.g. webinars, 1-800-BANTING), needing to move from renting office space and a physical presence to reaching more Canadians (and not just in the communities where there are offices).”
The branch, which opened in 1976 to provide care and information for local people affected by diabetes, will remain open Tuesday and Friday afternoons until the end of March.
A number of committed volunteers managed, promoted and supported the branch over 40 years, including Alice and George Van Ankum, Nancy Dietrich, Cora Anne Morden, Audrey Morden, Henry Westendorp, Theresa Johnston, Bonnie Wilson, Dorothy DeJong, Everdina Bender, Norma Madgett and Bonnie Whitehead.
Officials said they wish to “thank the volunteers for years of dedicated service and their huge contribution” to those affected by diabetes in the branch area.
“The office in Harriston may be closing, but will remain present through our volunteers, health-care partners and through technology (1-800-BANTING, webinars),’ officials stated.
“We will continue to support this … area through our activities and partnerships. Diabetes Canada employees will remain assigned to supporting your area and being present in the community.”
On Feb. 13 the Canadian Diabetes Association became Diabetes Canada, with a goal “to shine the light on diabetes in new and bold ways.”
