Township unveils Rockwood skatepark plans

Guelph-Eramosa has revealed the design for the new skatepark in Rockwood.

The new skatepark, scheduled for construction this spring in Rockmosa Park, will include features such a small turn-around quarter pipe, five-stair step, flat rail, flat ledge, bank-to-bank table top gap with a handrail and roll-in.

Based on community input, the aspect that Milne said he thinks people will be most excited about is the mini-ramp section.

“A lot of the (other) features in the skatepark can be simulated in an urban environment by a bench or a flipped over picnic table or a retaining wall or that sort of thing,” Milne said. “There’s nothing in the urban environment that simulates that one (mini-ramp) feature.”

Last July Guelph-Eramosa council approved New Line Skateparks Inc. to design and build the project after seeing a $349,927 proposal. The budget was $350,000.

In the fall the public attended workshops on the project and ultimately decided on the design in October.

“It has a good mix of what … the community was looking for that came out to those public meetings,” Milne said.

The Rockmosa skatepark is the first project New Line Skateparks Inc. will work on this spring.

“Most of their other projects are … in northern Ontario so they’ve looked at our project and because of the proximity and the way the winter goes we’ve been put as their first project because they feel the site will be ready (when their) other projects will still be under snow,” said Milne.

He anticipates the construction will be completed before the end of the school year.

“It fills the need for those teenagers or those kids that aren’t into structured Sports,” he said.

“They don’t fit on a ball team, they don’t play soccer … we don’t have anything in Rockwood for that group. And so I think this is going to fill the void and it’s going to give something for all ages of youth to do and keep themselves busy … it’s going to be exciting.”

The skatepark can be used with skateboards, trick bikes, scooters and inline skates.
