Local OPP are once again reminding the public to protect their property and valuables against thieves after approximately 20 vehicles were reported to have been entered over the weekend of Nov. 18 to 20 throughout the county.
Some of the incidents that officers investigated include:
– Suspects entered a vehicle that was parked in a driveway at a residence on the Second Line of Guelph-Eramosa Township. The garage door opener was used and access was gained to the garage and a bike and chainsaw were stolen.
– Three unlocked vehicles were entered at separate residences on Highway 6 where various items were taken.
– A window was smashed out of a locked vehicle that was parked at a business in Moorefield – a purse that was sitting on the passenger seat was taken.
– Seven unlocked vehicles were entered at various residences along Wellington Road 51. Stolen items included keys, vehicle documentation, sunglasses, an iPod and a hunting knife.
– Numerous unlocked vehicles were entered on Carter Road and Cooks Mill Road – several items taken.
– A pick-up truck was stolen from a residence in Pilkington Township – keys were left in the unlocked vehicle.
Police offer the following tips to prevent you from becoming a victim:
– always lock your doors once your vehicle has been parked, even if you are only going to be a few minutes and regardless of where it is parked including your driveway;
-remove valuables from your vehicle. If you can’t – hide them and keep them from plain view;
– park in well-lit areas with high traffic; and
– clean out your garage and park your vehicle in it – locking your vehicle and the garage door.
Remember, if you see something, say something, police urge. Anyone seeing suspicious activity or behaviour around their vehicle or neighbourhood, should report it.
Stolen vehicles are often used to commit other criminal offences.
