On Oct. 2 at 1pm, the horses and hounds are back and Downton Abbey comes to downtown Elora.
Once again, Elora will host the pomp and circumstance of the Eglinton and Caledon Horse and Hound parade, benefiting Groves Memorial Community Hospital and the Canadian Cancer Society.
This year organizers are pleased to report that McKewon’s Clydesdales will be on hand with their coach.
Also, “Chance and “Sammy,” two miniature ponies, will be on hand to help collect donations.
Rain or shine, the excitement for this free event begins at 1pm at Bissell Park. Plan to arrive early in order to meet and mingle with the riders, horses and hounds, as well as witness the ceremonial cheque presentation.
At about 1:30pm, set against the autumn scenery of the village, up to 40 liveried riders and the frolicking hounds depart the park and take to the streets in this non-sporting event, collecting free-will donations as they go. There will be photo opportunities along the way.
After promenading through the streets, with a photo rest at the Centre Wellington administrative building (1 MacDonald Square), the parade returns to the Mill Street Bistro for a rider’s reception, another chance to mingle with the riders, purchase food and drink, and mingle with some horses and hounds.
The Elora Horse and Hound parade has been actively raising funds to assist Groves Memorial Community Hospital and new this year, the Canadian Cancer Society.
Last year’s attendance was estimated at 5,000. To date, more than $20,000 has been raised to aid the cause.
Organizers hope for an even larger attendance and an even more generous spirit as horses and hounds take to the streets again this year.
