Canada’s Ballet Jörgen is returning to River Run Centre on Dec. 22 and 23 at 7:30pm with The Nutcracker.
Last year 24 students from dance schools in Guelph and the surrounding area were selected by Ballet Jörgen Canada to join the company’s professional cast for the Guelph performances.
Performance experience such as this is a valuable addition to the education of a dance/performing arts student. Once again, the company is offering the opportunity for local dance students to participate with the professional dancers in the Dec. 22 and 23 performances.
Ballet Jörgen will audition local dance students on Sept. 10 at Centennial CVI in Guelph.
Interested young dancers between the ages of 8 and 17 years are asked to register online at www.balletjorgencanada.ca.
In the weeks leading up to the performance, the selected students will rehearse regularly at Royal City School of Ballet and Theatre Jazz Inc in Guelph.
Created in 2008, Group of Seven Nutcracker premiered.
“Choreographed by Bengt Jörgen to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s well-loved score, this delightful re-working of the timeless classic is born from a collaboration with Kleinburg’s world-renowned McMichael Canadian Art Collection,” officials stated in a press release. “Ballet Jörgen’s The Nutcracker features as a backdrop, Canada’s 20th Century landscape artists Franklin Carmichael’s Church and Houses at Bisset (1931), Tom Thomson’s Snow in the Woods (1916) and L.L. FitzGerald’s Trees and Wildflowers (1922).”
Audiences embark on a grand journey through Canada’s northern lands filled with snowflakes, trilliums and woodland creatures. Roles such as Deer, Beaver, Frog, Dragonfly, Squirrel and Bear Cub will be filled by young dancers selected during the auditions on Sept. 10.
Canada’s Ballet Jörgen is the recipient of the 2011 National Arts Centre Award for Distinguished Contribution to Touring – an award which recognizes the company’s leadership role in the development of touring by professional dancers and companies in Canada.
Ballet Jörgen is renowned for ballets that combine innovation, warmth, humour and beauty. They are the only professional Canadian ballet company with a repertoire consisting exclusively of original works.
From Salt Spring Island to Newfoundland, Canada’s Ballet Jörgen is the most widely toured of Canada’s professional ballet companies.
