For the first time since Ontario distracted driving laws were introduced in 2009, deaths related to driver inattention are poised to double the number of deaths related to impaired driving.
The OPP made the announcement ahead of its distracted driving campaign set for the Labour Day long weekend.
As of mid-August, the OPP has investigated 38 road deaths in which distracted driving was involved, compared to 19 deaths involving an impaired driver.
“As families enjoy the last long weekend of the summer, it is important that everyone remember the dangers of distracted driving,” stated Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister David Orazietti.
“Texting and driving is very dangerous, and puts everyone on the road at risk.”
Over the long weekend – Sept. 2 to 5 – the OPP will be monitoring roads, waterways and trails to ensure drivers, boaters and off-roaders are operating in a safe manner.
