OPP offer few details on “˜threat of violence”™ at school

A threat of violence at a local high school last Thursday turned out to be bogus.

On May 26 at about 10:50am, Wellington County OPP received information of “a possible threat of violence” at Centre Wellington District High School.

“Both police and the school initiated appropriate protocol ensuring the safety of students and staff,” states an OPP press release.

“Police and school staff conducted a search of the property with nothing suspicious being located. Police are continuing to investigate, however have determined no threat exists at this time.”

Police said a written threat was found in a washroom but would not provide details about the nature of the threat.

“We are not divulging the threat at this time as it is evidentiary and we are continuing to investigate,” Constable Bob Bortolato told the Advertiser one day after the incident.

“We are taking this matter seriously. The OPP is in the process of determining the credibility of the threat with public safety the paramount concern.”

Police are reminding the public that all threats at schools are taken seriously and that it is an offence to cause a police investigation by making false statements accusing someone of a crime.

Anyone with any information relating to this or any other inappropriate school activity is urged to call Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a tip on-line at www.csgw.tips.
