Join Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) authority and community partners in a memorial tribute to local environmental champions Steve Revell, Bill Dinwoody and Frank Smedley at the annual Erin tree planting.
The event is on May 7 from 9am to noon at the Woolen Mills Trail. Participants are asked to meet at St. John Breabeuf Catholic School, 30 Millwood in Erin.
“A tree planting feels like a fitting way to honour the important environmental work of Steve, Bill and Frank,” said Dave Beaton, manager of community outreach with CVC.
“Their contributions in the community are extensive. Together, they spearheaded many community projects, including river restorations, tree plantings and the development of the Woollen Mills Trail.
“We will greatly miss their presence in the community.”
The annual Erin tree planting is also an opportunity for residents to contribute to the local community. Trees are important to help fight climate change.
Over the course of a year, a single acre of mature trees absorbs as much carbon dioxide as is produced by a car driven almost 42,000 kilometres.
Volunteer tree plantings help reduce soil erosion, create habitat for birds and animals and contribute to a beautiful community.
Volunteer support is essential to help maintain a healthy watershed. In 2015, CVC had 6,000 volunteers who contributed 30,000 hours and planted 16,000 native trees and shrubs.
No experience is required and CVC staff will provide tree planting demonstrations. Students are encouraged to participate and earn their community volunteer hours.
Participants should dress for the weather, and wear long pants and boots if possible. Shovels and gloves are provided but extras would be helpful.
