Join the community in the May 29 Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History.
This year there will be a local walk in Fergus on May 29, at 10am starting at the FreshCo plaza with participants walking along the Trestle Bridge Trail.
Every year Cystic Fibrosis Canada spends the month of May raising awareness about cystic fibrosis.
They also spend the month of May generating the crucial funding needed for life saving cystic fibrosis research, care and advocacy initiatives, to help improve the life of the more than 4,000 Canadians diagnosed with this disease.
One way that they raise awareness and generate funds is the CARSTAR Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History.
Every year thousands of people participate in one of the more than 60 different walk locations across Canada to help raise money for cystic fibrosis.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects the lungs and the digestive system. It is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. Patients with cystic fibrosis have ongoing infections in their lungs, eventually causing death in the majority of people who have cystic fibrosis.
It is important to raise money for research to help in the fight against cystic fibrosis. Efforts in the past 60 years have already increased the life expectancy of people who have this disease. Today many people with cystic fibrosis live to be well over the age of 50, which is remarkable given only a generation ago this was a pediatric disease. Early detection has played an important role in this transformation.
Ontario along with many other provinces has started new born screen testing making it part of a universal standard of care in Canada. In 2013 about half of Canadians newly diagnosed with CF were under the age of six months.
Lung transplants are improving the quality and longevity of lives but they are still not a cure. The need for research still remains; you can help raise money by participating in the Fergus CARSTAR Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History.
