The Good Brothers charity dinner, as well as dust suppression and gravel maintenance tenders, were a few of the items discussed at the April 4 Guelph-Eramosa council meeting.
Good Brothers dinner and dance
On May 7 the ninth annual Good Brothers benefit dinner and dance to support a Rockwood team’s participation in the One Walk to Conquer Cancer will take place at Rockmosa Community Centre.
Tickets for the full course roast beef dinner are $35 each and can be purchased by calling 519-856-9419 or 519-856-9650. The dinner starts at 6pm and the dancing and show start at 9pm.
The event will feature the Good Brothers band and will also have door prizes and 50/50 draws.
“I think council’s always very proud to support this event,” Mayor Chris White said. “It doesn’t get any better than this. They pack the hall, sell it out, everybody shows up, everybody dances, everybody has a good time and they raise a lot of money for an excellent cause.”
Over 80 businesses have contributed to the event this year, each donating a gift that the LionessClub wraps and puts in a basket to be used as prizes at the event. The winners are drawn from the number on each guest’s ticket stub, so there is no associated cost, explained organizer Doris Ens.
The One Walk to Conquer Cancer team is required to raise a specific amount of money to participate.
Last year the Rockwood event raised $4,700 for the walkers.
Council waived the Rockmosa Community Centre fee for the event.
Dust suppression
The township received three quotes by the March 22 deadline for 30% liquid magnesium chloride to use for dust suppression; however only one met the township’s specified criteria.
Council authorized director of public works Harry Niemi to enter into a contract with Miller Paving Ltd. for the supply of 30% liquid magnesium chloride at about $0.24 per litre.
The amount allocated for dust control in the 2016 public works budget was $42,000 and the total anticipated cost for 2016 will be under budget.
Maintenance gravel
The township received two quotes for maintenance gravel by the March 22 deadline. Cox Construction was the lowest bidder, with a quote of $12.64 per tonne delivery or $8.90 per tonne for pickup.
Public works budgeted $100,000 for maintenance gravel and shoulder maintenance and it is anticipated that this year will come in under budget.
The other bidder, James Dick Construction, quoted $13.33 per tonne delivery and $9.97 per tonne for pickup.
Rockwood Mews
A report regarding township comments to the county about the Rockwood Mews standard condominium application was deferred to the April 18 council meeting.
The application is for a 21-unit residential complex at 301 Joliffe Ave in Rockwood.
“I was going to go ahead but then we started talking with the proponent, had a number of detail questions …” said township planning consultant Bernie Hermsen of MHBC Planning Ltd. “So rather than rush it we try to get the right answers and come back in two weeks.”
