Area schools to “˜Adopt an Athlete”™

Special Olympics Ontario is teaming up with local school boards to help send athletes to the Special Olympics this spring.

When Special Olympics organizers asked the Wellington Catholic District School Board and the Upper Grand District School Board to “change someone’s life” they were all in.

Both boards are aligning their schools with the Adopt an Athlete program. Each school has received a plaque with an athlete’s photo, sport and hometown and is being asked to raise $500 to help cover costs for that athlete to participate in the Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Spring Games.

Schools are also asked to participate in Special Olympics Day on April 12 and are invited to attend ceremonies and all competitions.

The Special Olympics Provincial Spring Games take place in Guelph from May 26 to 28. They will be the largest in Special Olympics Ontario history and feature swimming, 5- and 10-pin bowling, powerlifting, basketball and rhythmic gymnastics.
