Farm structure destroyed in Jan. 8 fire

A fire destroyed a farm structure here on the morning of Jan. 8.
The Guelph-Eramosa Fire Department was first to respond shortly after 6am to the call to a farm on Jones Baseline between Highway 7 and Eastview Road, explained fire chief John Osborne.
“It was called in by a passerby who saw it,” he said. “Upon arrival it was fully engulfed.”
Guelph-Eramosa firefighters were assisted by Puslinch and Guelph departments, with approximately 25 firefighters on the scene initially. The site was cleared by 9am and there were no injuries.
“It was a relatively easy fire but the biggest thing was getting the water here,” Osborne said.
“That’s why we had the other two fire departments assisting.”
On Jan. 12 Osborne said an investigation into the cause of the first was conducted.
“Due to the extensive damage caused by the fire, there was not sufficient evidence present to determine the cause of this fire,” he said. “This fire will be classified as undetermined.”
The damage estimate for the Quonset building covered in nylon fabric and the contents is approximately $100,000 Osborne said.
“Right now the building itself is a total loss, there is some construction equipment and some house trailers that have been fully destroyed,” Osborne said.
Wellington County OPP identified two fifth wheel trailers, two camper-style trailers, a boat and a backhoe as property destroyed.
