Under the sea adventure headed for Orangeville theatre

A lovelorn mermaid, a guppy side kick, a crabby chaperone, and an evil sea witch will all take centre stage at The Town Hall Opera House, from Jan. 8 to 17.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages.

Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, and bargains with the evil sea witch Ursula to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems.

With music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs including Under the Sea, Kiss the Girl, and Part of Your World.

Orangeville Music Theatre is one of the first groups in Ontario to be granted the rights to produce this magical stage show. The show has also been entered as part of ACT-CO’s (Association of Community Theatre’s Central Ontario) festival season.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid has something for everyone. With energetic dance numbers, fun-filled songs, and colourful costumes, it is a terrific theatre experience for the entire family.

The magical musical production is in the capable hands of artistic directors Lucinda Silva and Elizabeth Hagyard. Silva has directed a number of shows for Orangeville Music Theatre including The Wizard of Oz and Shrek The Musical. She also serves on the OMT board as president.

Hagyard has many choreography credits behind her and will also be in charge of choreography for The Little Mermaid.

Silva and Hagyard are joined by accomplished music director Heather Holmes, costume designer Bobbi Ferguson, and stage manager Mark Gomes.

An impressive cast of performers has been assembled for this production including Sarah Martin as Ariel.

Martin delighted audiences with her beautiful voice when she played the role of Margot in Legally Blonde The Musical this past June.

Seasoned performer Malakai Fox brings the character of Prince Eric to life. Fox has an impressive resume which includes the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserable (Brampton).

He has an amazing voice that will leave audiences longing to hear more.

Taking on the role of Sebastian is Craig Marshall. Marshall is also a very accomplished actor who won the hearts of Orangeville audiences with his portrayal of Shrek in June 2013. His comedic timing is incredible and he is sure to have the audience laughing right out loud with his portrayal of Sebastian.

The evil sea witch Ursula is played by Silva. She is no stranger to the stage. Her portrayal of Miss Hannigan in Orangeville Music Theatre’s production of Annie brought her much praise and admiration. Silva has been on stage, directing, or behind the scenes of Orangeville Music Theatre for 10 years.

Join Ariel and her friends for fun and adventure under the sea. This is a great show for the entire family and makes a terrific Christmas gift.
