The Guelph Organic Conference will once again fill the Guelph University Centre starting Jan. 28 with four days of workshops and a two-day free trade show.
The annual event, now in its 35th year, attracts consumers, farmers, gardeners, grain traders, processors and related organizations from across Canada and the United States.
“There is a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about producing food and farming,” said Arwa de Groot, herd manager at Mapleton’s Organics near Teviotdale in a press release.
“The conference is an opportunity for consumers and farmers to meet and talk to each other.
“Farmers are very proud of the food they produce, and given the opportunity we love to explain how we produce that food.”
Norm Eygenraam, president of Multi Shelter Solutions in Palmerston, said in a press release, “The people who come to the organic conference have a very real thirst for knowledge. They appreciate what organic offers.”
Forty two workshops take place over the four-day period, by paid admission.
“The broad educational value of the workshops has been a significant drawing card for the conference since its inception,” Eygenraam said.
Tomas Nimmo, conference manager, said in a press release, “Some workshops are directly tailored to farmers – such as soil health, perennial weeds and grass-fed beef genetics – but they are still open for everyone.”
He added, “You’ll find a mix of existing organic farmers, interested non-organic farmers, gardeners and organic enthusiasts attending.”
With many small equipment dealers, grain traders and certification bodies represented, Nimmo emphasizes that it’s a good opportunity for farmers to investigate growing and marketing organic crops.
“Organic price premiums for crops are substantial and demand continues to increase,” he said.
The Guelph Organic Conference takes place at the Guelph University Centre from Jan. 28 to 31.
Eygenraam will be presenting Greenhouses 202: Making Sure Your Structure Survives the Elements on Jan. 30 at 10:45am. His booth will be in the lower level.
The Mapleton’s Organic booth will be on the main floor where they will be scooping ice cream. De Groot is also a panelist for the workshop Women In Organics – A World of Possibilities taking place on Jan. 31 at 1:30pm.

Online registration is available until Jan. 24.
After Jan. 24, individuals can register on site. The free weekend trade show does not require registration.
