Performers ready for Anne of Green Gables

A total of 30 young performers from southwestern Ontario have been selected to be members of the children’s chorus in one of the most popular musicals in Canadian theatre history.

As part of Drayton Entertainment’s audience development program, local youth have been cast alongside professional performers in the theatre company’s production of Anne of Green Gables at the Dunfield Theatre Cambridge, running Oct. 14 to Nov. 8th.

“There is a tremendous pool of young talent in our community,” said Alex Mustakas, artistic director of Drayton Entertainment. “We are delighted to give these aspiring performers the chance to be on stage and learn from the professional company.”

Over 175 young performers attended an open call last month. To secure a coveted spot, the hopefuls had to demonstrate excellence in singing and dancing in order to keep up with the rigours of a professional rehearsal schedule.

Based on the world-famous novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables is the story of mischievous red-haired orphan Anne Shirley, who arrives at Green Gables in Avonlea, PEI full of hope for a new life. Upon arrival, she is dismayed to discover that elderly siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert had expressly asked for a boy. Anne gradually manages to charm her way into their hearts, as well as the hearts of the villagers of Avonlea. In doing so, she finds the happiness and sense of belonging for which  she has searched her entire life.

Anne of Green Gables is on stage from Oct. 14 to Nov. 8. Regular performance tickets are $42 for adults and $25 for youth under 20 years of age. Tickets for groups of 20 or more are $34. HST is applicable to all ticket prices.
