One hundred and four students were honoured for top marks and math achievements and with two memorial awards at Centre Wellington District High School’s fall recognition ceremony on Sept. 24.
Scott Giddy presented the Ryan Giddy Memorial Award to Mason Haddock.
“Twenty three years ago a fun-loving, energetic young man came to Centre Wellington as a Grade 9 student. Unfortunately Ryan Giddy did not live to graduate as the cancer he had battled since he was a very young boy claimed his life in 1990,” said Giddy.
“In Ryan’s honour and supported by his family, Centre Wellington has awarded over the last two decades a junior citizen of the year award. The award goes to a member of the Grade 9 class who has made a positive contribution to life here at Centre Wellington.”
Brian Goodman was presented the Bryce Hogg Award by the members of Hogg’s family. Hogg, a student at CWDHS, lost his life in July 2013 while tubing in the Elora Gorge.
“This award is not based on academics, how many teams one is on or being an amazing student overall; this award is about being an outstanding person,” said Brianne Hogg, Bryce’s sister.
“He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and was known for having a caring, open ear for his friends and classmates,” she said.
“But most of all, Bryce was accepting. No one person was worth more than another in his eyes; everyone deserved a friend and to be accepted. Everything that made Bryce stand out is the exact reason that this recipient of this award deserves to be acknowledged.”
