OPP had busy Labour Day long weekend

Officers from the Wellington County OPP were highly visible over the Labour Day long weekend, police say.

The detachment participated in the OPP’s provincial traffic safety initiative, focusing on the “big 4” areas of concern: aggressive, distracted and impaired driving and seatbelt compliance.

“Speed continues to be a concern and increases the severity of damage and potential injury for those involved in a collision,” police said in a press release.

Over the long weekend,  158 drivers were issued speeding tickets, with two drivers taken off the road for the more serious racing charge (50km/h over the speed limit).

Eight seatbelt infractions were issued and numerous RIDE spot checks were set up throughout the county, but no impaired drivers detected.

“Officers will continue to focus on those infractions that are commonly seen in most collision investigations; speed, alcohol, distraction and lack of occupant restraint usage,” said Wellington County OPP detachment commander Scott Lawson.

“I am very pleased that there were no serious motor vehicle collisions over the weekend. This can be directly attributed to the motoring public driving in a safe and responsible manner and for that we say thank-you.”
