Grand River Raceway will host inaugural Wiener Dog Race

Grand River Raceway’s second last Fun and Frivolity Friday night of the summer is on August 28 and will host the boutique racetrack’s first ever Wiener Dog Race.

Following race five, each dachshund will line up accompanied by two handlers; one on the start line and one on the finish line. On “go” they’ll release their pooches and the crowd will cheer them on as they race to complete the 20 metre dash (in theory that is). For added spectacle, every move will be called by track announcer Gary Guy. The Wiener Dog race will replace the bouncy pony stakes on the Friday night broadcast.

After the hilarity, each contestant will receive a participatation prize. The top three finishers will be awarded gifts from event sponsors: Loyall Pet Food and Legendary Canine. In addition, the winners will receive a pet store gift card, the winner will receive $100, runner up $50 and third place will strut home with a $25 gift card.

Registration information and full contest rules can be found on the Grand River Raceway “Wiener Dog race” webpage. Those who wish to register their wiener dogs for the race must pay a $10 fee before August 24, there will be no registrations at the door. It’s a first-come-first-serve registration process and organizers are capping the number of registrants at 30.

A list of frequently asked questions can also be found on the “Wiener Dog Race” webpage.

Grand River Raceway’s 2015 live racing season continues Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights at 6:30pm.
