Highway 6 north in Fergus will close for two weeks to allow subdivision servicing

As residents recover from the month-long closure of the Wellington County bridge crossing the Grand River at Scotland/Gartshore Streets, a new major (if temporary) road closure is on the horizon.

Centre Wellington will need to close off St. David Street (Highway 6) to install new development services for Jennark’s nearby Heritage Square in the St. David, Garafraxa and James Street area.

On Aug. 24. managing director of infrastructure Colin Baker noted “we’re looking to the closure of St. David Street for a couple of weeks while servicing is going on.”

Councillor Mary Lloyd wanted to ensure the additional work would not happen at the same time the Scotland/Gartshore Street bridge construction is going on.

“Will the closure of St. David happen before the bridge is reopened?”

Work on that bridge is expected to continue until mid- to late-September.

Baker assured councillors “we can’t let that scenario happen.” He anticipated that once the bridge reopens, crews would be in shortly thereafter to start work on St. David.

Additional work this fall includes partial repaving of the intersection of St. David and St. Andrew Streets in downtown Fergus.

Baker said it would not be the entire intersection, but would address the areas most severely rutted.

“There will be a noticeable improvement in the intersection,” he said.
