Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong, announced NeighbourWoods has hired two summer students to help with the promotion of the tree inventory, now in its sixth year.
The students are funded by Canada Summer Jobs 2015, a Canadian government initiative that funds mostly not for profit employers to create summer workplace experiences for local students.
Joe Atkinson and Jared Slack are the students NeighbourWoods has hired this year. Atkinson is a graduate of Centre Wellington District High school and will be working toward achieving his diploma in the Ecosystem Management Technician program at Fleming College this fall. Slack is also a CWDHS graduate now attending Trent University in the Environmental Science program.
“The government’s top priority is creating jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity for all Canadians,” said Chong. “Through Canada Summer Jobs, we are helping local organizations like NeighbourWoods create summer job opportunities for students, while strengthening our community’s economy.”
Canada Summer Jobs provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses to create summer job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years who are full-time students intending to return to their studies in the next school year. Locally 63 positions were created with an investment of $176 000. Proving to be a valuable initiative for both students and local organizations, Canada Summer Jobs recognizes local circumstances and helps students get the experience they need to be competitive in the job market.
NeighbourWoods is a branch of the Elora Environment Centre working to rebuild the community tree canopy through tree planting, stewardship, public education and advocacy about the need for, and value of, trees. Their mission is to advocate for the health, protection and regeneration of our urban trees through public involvement in education, celebration and stewardship.
