Whale new Trees for Mapleton chair

The Trees for Mapleton committee, formed in 2008, is made up of local landowners and farmers working with the Grand River Conservation Authority, Wellington County Green Legacy and the Township of Mapleton, to promote the planting of trees in Mapleton Township.

Since 1991,  over 600,000 trees have been planted in the township.

The Ontario Trillium foundation provided a grant to five townships to help promote and enhance the environment but that funding has come to an end. NextEra Energy is providing $20,000 to the program over the next five years.

The committee looks at ways to support landowners and farmers that benefit everyone in the township by creating a healthier environment.

At a recent meeting, Liz Samis passed on the role of chair to Bruce Whale.

Samis  commented,  “Bruce Whale knows the township well and he has a vision that the committee will build on to enhance what needs to be done to promote the planting of trees in the right places. Bruce has demonstrated over his farming career the importance of sustainable farming practices. He leads by example and he knows the challenges of farming.  Our committee looks forward to working with Bruce.”

Landowners are encouraged to check the Trees for Mapleton link on the township website for more information.
