With school ending, police want to remind drivers and parents to take extra care and keep local children safe this week and throughout the summer months.
“There will be an increased amount of pedestrian and bicycle traffic on our streets and sidewalks,” states a Wellington County OPP press release.
Motorists are reminded to:
– drive with care, especially near parks and recreation centres;
– when coming upon bicycles, give them space;
– slow down, and keep an eye for children playing near the street; and
– always watch for children while backing up; walk around the vehicle to make sure no one is behind it.
Police also urge parents to talk with their children and remind them of pedestrian rules when walking/crossing streets. The OPP also reminds parents that bicycle helmets are mandatory for those under 18.
