WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local GRCA events set to take place in this month include:

Grand Opportunities Fly Fishing Forum

On-river seminars and related events about fly fishing will take place at Belwood Lake Conservation Area on June 6. More information is available at www.friendsofthegrandriver.com. Seminars and events are free with admission to the park.

Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life

The annual Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life at Guelph Lake on June 6 has teams of participants running at night with the goal of raising $120,000 for cancer research. For more information contact the  Wellington County unit 519-824-4261 or wellington@ontario.cancer.ca

The Underwater World of Guelph Lake

Come and explore the water-world of Guelph Lake on June 6. Participants will find themselves dip-netting with a nature guide, looking for frogs, minnows and invertebrates. The exploration runs from 2pm to 3:30 pm and is free with a park admission. No registration is required and participants should met at the Camper Beach parking lot

Rocks and Caves of Rockwood

Rockwood Conservation Area, 161 Fall Street, Rockwood

Join a nature guide at Rockwood Conservation Area on June 6 from 10 to 11:30am for a caving expedition beginning with a short stroll to visit one of Rockwood’s largest caves. For the adventurous, there will be the option of crawling into one of the tunnels. The walk is free with park admission, no registration is required and participants are asked to meet Behind the mini-putt by the trailer

Juvenile Diabetes Walk for a Cure

The TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes on June 7 at Guelph Lake is an outdoor celebration where families, friends and organizations can raise funds and awareness to make a difference in the lives of over 300,000 Canadians living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The walk is 5 kilometres.

2 Rivers Festival

The 2Rivers Festival is held on the banks of the Speed and Eramosa rivers in Guelph from June 9 to 14. It offers free events that showcase local rivers, their ecology, and their importance in local culture. The 2Rivers Cleanup takes place on June 13 from 9am to noon.

Nature Detective Hike

Join a nature guide on a June 13 hike from 2 to 3:30pm to highlight the many different birds and animals that make Guelph Lake Park their home. Learn how to identify the signs that birds and animals leave behind. The walk is free with park admission, registration is not required and participants are asked to meet at Main Beach parking lot.

Hiking for the Birds

The limestone cliffs, the water, the thick cedars and deciduous tree canopy of Rockwood Conservation Area provide wonderfully varied habitats that entice many different species of birds. Take a hike on June 20 and 21 between 10am and 11:30am with a nature guide and identify the birds and their songs. The hike is free with admission to the park, no registration required and participants are asked to meet behind the mini-put by the trailer

Guelph Lake Triathlon weekend

The Subaru Triathlon Series provides a variety of race distances for all levels of athletes. The Guelph Lake Conservation Area is dubbed “Canada’s Most Popular Triathlon Site” and will be seeing triathlons on June 20 and 21.

Salamander Stroll

Take a hike with a nature guide at Rockwood Conservation Area and discover where the salamanders hang out. Participants will look through the woods to find some of these fascinating and elusive creatures. The hike will go from 10 to 11:30am. Participants are asked to meet behind the mini-putt and by the trailer. The admission is free with admission for the park. No registration is required.

Underwater World of Rockwood

Come and explore the water-world of Rockwood on June 27. Participants will find themselves dip-netting with a nature guide, looking for frogs, minnows and invertebrates near the Harris Mill ruins. Participants should bring boots, Crocs or old running shoes and be prepared to get them wet. The exploration runs from 10 to 11:30 am and is free with a park admission. No registration is required and participants should met at the parking lot by the Mill ruins.

Citizen Science Bug Safari

Be a citizen scientist for the afternoon on June 28 at Guelph Lake and join a nature guide to chase, catch and identify insects in all their life stages. Findings will be recorded and submitted to the various citizen science programs including Pollination Canada. The insect search will take place from 2pm to 3:30 pm and is free with park admission. No registration is required and participants are asked to meet at the Main Beach parking lot.
