United Church to celebrate 90-year milestone

Everyone is invited to hear the mass choir and mass bands from eight area United Churches on June 7 at 11am at Melville United Church in Fergus to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the union that formed the United Church of Canada.

Ninety years ago, the United Church of Canada was formed from four other churches and it was News around the world.

The Methodist, Congregational Union, the General Council of Union Churches of Western Canada and 70% of the Presbyterians joined together in 1925 to form the United Church of Canada.

The special church service at Melville on June 7 will bring together the Alma, Elora, Barrie Hill, Belwood, Bethany, Melville, Metz and Speedside United Churches in one grand celebration of the union. All are welcome to lunch after the service.

Participating churches will host visitors with “Open House” during the week of June 1 to 5. Visitors can tour the churches, learn about many years of local church history while browsing historical items and archives that will be on display.

Melville United Church, the historical stone church in downtown Fergus, will ring the church bell 90 times on June 10 at 10:30am to mark the exact time of union in 1925.

Everyone is invited to Melville for the bell ringing and birthday refreshments at the celebration on the lawn.
