Reflect, read and enjoy the art of two very different comic book collections – The Amazing Spider-Man and Not Brand Echh. The exhibits open May 16 at Wellington County Museum and Archives as part of Wellington County Collects. Both exhibits run through Nov. 8.
With over 1,000 issues in his collection, The Amazing Spider-Man collector has opted to remain anonymous, much like the character of Peter Parker.
“The comics are half soap opera and half action,” the secret collector said. “The story of the life of Peter Parker, his relationships with Mary Jane Watson (girlfriend), Aunt May and his friends are the most interesting part of what makes Spider-Man popular.”
The second collector, Chris Piccinetti – a comic book enthusiast and County of Wellington employee – highlights Not Brand Echh which was a satiric comic book series published by Marvel Comics from 1967 to 1969. The series parodies its own superheroes as well as those of other comic book publishers. Running only 13 issues, both Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby worked on the series
“This series was so different from regular superhero comic books,” says Piccinetti. “It showcases the superhero’s sense of humour.”
To explore deeper into the world of comic books, join the museum for Unwebbing Peter Parker/Spider- Man: A Comic Convention Panel on, May 21 at 6pm. Five comic book experts will explore the life and times of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Doors open at 5pm. Admission is by donation.
The Wellington County Museum and Archives is located on Wellington Road 18 between Fergus and Elora. The Galleries are open weekdays from 9:30am to 4:30pm, and on weekends from 1 to 5pm.
