Fergus twirlers compete at the world level

Three members of the Superstars Baton Club competed at the 2015 WFNBTA World Baton Twirling Championships held in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy the week of April 6.

Alyssa George, 12, Elsie Post, 10, and Makenzie Worton, 13, were part of Team Canada which consisted of 33 athletes from across the country.

There were over 1,000 athletes at the championships representing 18 different countries. Elite athletes competed for world titles in the four-day competition.

Last year these members of Superstars Baton Club qualified to represent Canada at the world championships overseas.

The baton twirling competition is similar to the Olympic Games in that it occurs every three years in a different host country. Each athlete competing in Italy qualified in their home country as one of the top three competitors for their age division.

The World Championships in 2018 will be held in Norway.

Elsie Post medaled with a fourth in the Juvenile 2 Baton division out of 19 athletes, 11th in the Juvenile Solo division out of 26 athletes and 12th in the Juvenile X-Strut division out of 29 athletes.

All three members competed on the Twirl Corps consisting of members from both Superstars and Stars United Baton Club in Richmond Hill. The team placed fifth out of nine other corps at the Championships.

Baton twirling is composed of numerous athletic skills all rolled into one activity.  Twirlers require the stamina of long-distance runner, the hand-eye coordination of a baseball player or golfer, the grace of a ballet dancer, the flexibility and tumbling skills of a gymnast and the determination and dedication necessary to be successful in any sport.

Congratulations to the three athletes on a great showing and awesome results at the world championships, team officials said.
