It’s March Break at the Wellington County Museum and Archives and it will be celebrating the Canadian Armed Services.
Each afternoon during March Break, themed activities or presentations will take place from 1 to 4pm, reflecting one aspect of the Armed Services.
All programs are appropriate for families and adults of all ages.
On March 16, get ready to Stand on Guard for Thee with the Canadian Army.
Learn survival skills, make your own MRE (Meal Ready to Eat), build a working compass, and test yourself to see if you could make it in the Canadian Army.
On March 17, take flight with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Test your aeronautical skills by entering a paper-plane-building competition or build a paratrooper toy craft you can launch into the sky.
The theme is all undercover agents and spies on March 18 to celebrate the Canadian Intelligence community. Ciphers, puzzles, and scavenger hunts abound.
As well visitors can build their own working spy camera to take home.
Bring your sea legs on March 19 as we celebrate the Royal Canadian Navy. Enter our paper boat building competition, learn how to tie naval knots, and live the navy life by making and eating your very own “hardtack and grog.”
Finally on March 20, finish by celebrating those who stand with the Armed Forces – the Canadian Home front.
Learn how to can and preserve rations, and how to knit scarfs for the front, as well as getting a start on planting your own victory garden.
Each day, everyone will have the chance to say thank you to the brave men and service women of the Canadian Armed Forces by writing a letter or creating some artwork for a Canadian soldier presently serving overseas.
In addition, visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about the variety of Canadian missions around the world, through where those letters are being sent.
During each afternoon, snowshoeing, skating and tobogganing will be available outside at the museum as well free hot chocolate to keep out the winter chill.
Admission is by donation.
Children in attendance must be accompanied by an adult. For a full description of all March break activities, please visit our website at www.wellington.ca/museum.
