The Elora Centre for the Arts might be undertaking a total rethinking of its operations.
Currently, the centre is own-ed by community members, but that, too, could change.
Following a special meeting of council on March 2 regarding final passage of the 2015 budget, councillors were asked about rumours the centre might close.
Councillor Kirk McElwain noted the centre is currently owned by the members of the community. “At the moment, there is no intent to close,” he said.
He explained changes could include separating the operation of the building from the operation of the centre for the arts board – “In other words, selling the building and being independent is one option we are looking at.”
McElwain stated, “We have no intention of closing at the moment. As to rumours that the centre is financially struggling … yes we are.”
McElwain said none of the tenants have been asked to leave … “We have talked to all of the current lessees and explained the current financial situation and the change of strategic direction.”
ECFTA co-chairs Robbie Keith and Karen Fisher state unequivocally that the Elora Centre for the Arts will stay open. “We are not closing our doors. We are open and encourage folks to drop by. We are ramping up for Art in the Yard. We have had challenges in the past several months and as a result are undergoing a reset and restart approach to our core business of being an arts hub for the region. Our intention is to continue to serve our wonderful community by being an active part of it.
“The Elora Centre for the Arts is an integral part of the arts rich region we live in. We continue to have the community interests at heart.”
