Tickets are selling fast for Spirituals and Folksongs.
On Oct. 19 the Elora Festival Singers kick off their fall/winter concert series with a performance of North American spirituals and folksongs.
Joining the singers on stage is Canadian actress and singer, Jackie Richardson, with pianist/composer Joe Sealy and bassist Paul Novotny.
Some highlights from the Spirituals and Folksongs program include:
– Old Time Religion; a traditional gospel song dating from 1873 and popularized by The Caravans in 1954;
– Deep Down Inside and A River of Dreams; two excerpts from the Africville Suite written by the Juno-award winning composer Joe Sealy;
– When the Battle is Over; written by American gospel singer and pastor, Walter Hawkins;
– The Rain is Over and Gone; written by composer/performer Paul Halley – a long-time friend of the Elora Festival and Singers;
– Down by the Riverside; a gospel song from the early 1900s popularized by Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole; and
– Home I’ll Be; written by Rita MacNeil and arranged by Stuart Calvert.
