Summer flower show in Clifford a blooming success

The Clifford and District Horticultural Society summer flower show was held Aug. 26 at the community hall.

 Barb Harris noted 19 exhibitors entered 267 exhibits. Prizes were handed out in nine categories:

– cut flowers – Jean Yenssen (31 points) prize donated by Ontario Seed Company;

– gladiolas – Marg Reidt (nine points) prize donated by Dine on Nine;

– grasses – Isabel Senek (10 points) prize donated by Wild Things; roses – Wayne Pfeffer (12 points) prize donated by Frances Newman;

– potted plants – Wayne Pfeffer (11 points) prize donated by Blanche Freeman; fruits and vegetables – Eleanor Litt (20 points) prize donated by Bruce and Georgie Hutchison;

– designs – Wayne Pfeffer (16 points) prize donated by Bonnie Whitehead;

– photographs – Isabel Senek (nine points) prize donated by Jean Yenssen;

– President’s Special – 1st – Eleanor Litt; – 2nd – Jean Yenssen.   

President Georgie Hutchison noted the stiff competition in the junior categories. Age six to nine:  Daniel Pfeffer – 40 points; Michaela Casemore – 35 points; Morgan Unsworth – 17 points; Justus Unsworth – 13 points. Age 10 to 16: Becky Walters – 40 points; Alyssa Casemore – 28 points; Sadie Pfeffer – 27 points; Justin Casemore – 26 points, Nathan Giles –  five points.  

The youth gardens were displayed in photos with Justus 1st, Morgan 2nd, Daniel 3rd, and Michaela 4th; and Becky 1st; Justin 2nd; and Alyssa 3rd.   

Guest speaker Dorelene Anderson of Harriston demonstrated an underwater design and a water viewing design.

Anderson suggested members attend workshops, practise designs with their own flowers, and entering flower shows at every opportunity.

Local residents are encouraged give Barb Harris a call at 327-8138 if they would like to volunteer to plant and maintain the flower beds at the community hall.
