Local farm family chosen in provincial farm competition

A local farm family has been chosen as the Bank of Montreal’s  Ontario Farm Family honourees for Wellington County.

The Day family, owners of Webfoot Farm and Hatchery Ltd., were chosen as the county representative in the competition among 25 families throughout Ontario and are in the running for the Top Ten BMO Ontario Farm Families to be chosen at this year’s International Plowing Match and Rural Expo.

“Webfoot is a waterfowl hatchery, of which there are very few in Canada,” said Amy Strachan, administrative assistant with the Ontario Plowmen’s Association a co-sponsor of the award. “They specialize in Muscovy ducks only of both white and black varieties. Webfoot supplies day old ducklings to other growers who raise birds for meat as well as having a store front where the public can come in to buy live ducklings in any amount.  In addition to the bird operation, they also are a cash-cropping  operation and grow corn, soybeans, wheat and barley.”

“They were chosen as the BMO Ontario Farm Family Local Honourees for Wellington County as nominated by the local Plowmen’s Association and local committee group that included the representative from the Bank of Montreal,” Strachan added.

The Day Family received local 2014 BMO Farm Family designation and now qualifies to be named one of the top 10 Ontario Farm Families.

The Ontario Plowmen’s Association (OPA) and BMO Bank of Montreal recently recognized 26 families for their outstanding contributions to the Ontario agricultural sector.

The Farm Family Awards were created to promote renewed urban-rural relationships and recognize outstanding Ontario farm families who best represent the value of the family farmer. The program focuses on recognizing the contributions these families make to enhancing quality of life in their agricultural communities.

Up to 10 of these families, as chosen by the OPA Farm Family Provincial Committee, will be honoured at the 2014 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo in Ivy, Ontario..

“The Ontario Plowmen’s Association is proud to recognize the Day Family as the 2014 Wellington County Farm Family honouree,” said Don Priest, Director, Ontario Plowmen’s Association. “We believe that through these awards we will be able to showcase how the values and hard work of the farm family enhance our quality of life.”

The Day Family will receive special recognition at the Wellington Plowing Match on Aug. 21.
