Whether one calls it Dominion Day or Canada Day, there is going to be a party here all day and night on July 1.
In Elora, it’s Dominion Day, kicking off with the Elora Volunteer Firefighter Breakfast in Macdonald Square by the cenotaph from 7 to 11am.
Next up is the soapbox derby on Geddes Street, which runs from 8 to 11am.
Meanwhile, there’s a 5/10k run/walk heading out from Bissell Park (knectcares.org) starting at 8:30am.
At 11am, following the derby, is the annual Dominion Day Parade coordinated by the Centre Wellington Rotary club. Parade marshalling begins at 10am at Elora Community Centre. No registration is required and bands are welcome.
Following the parade, finishing up at Bissell Park around noon, free hot dogs and beverages are being served by members of the Fergus Lions Club.
Noon also marks the start of the Dominion Day Dash, also at Bissell Park (races for kids 12 and under).
Topping things off at 1:15pm is the Centre Wellington Rotary Duck Race.
With an afternoon break, the Fergus nighttime fireworks extravaganza is at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex from 6 to 10pm.
With entrance at the east gate, the cost is a $2 donation per person.
Entertainment includes a kiddie midway, face painting, zumba and food vendors.
Back by popular demand is the dunk tank. Nominations are open for “dunkees” at www.cwcnadaday.ca.
Live entertainment includes Lucas Rogerson, youth song contest winners and local high school bands.
The fireworks extravaganza is expected to start at 10pm.
