Giant hogweed found in Erin

Giant hogweed is here.

On June 3 Erin councillor John Brennan told councillors  the invasive plant was discovered recently within the town’s borders.

“Giant hogweed is a plant that looks similar to Queen Anne’s Lace – except that it is enormously big. But the important thing is that the plant is quite toxic.”

Brennan said bare skin exposed to the plant can develop burning blisters.

He said anyone seeing the plants should report it to the Wellington County weed control department.

That information is on the town website, he said.

“But please, if you see it, don’t touch it,” said Brennan.

He asked staff if there was a means to earmark this so that people see this on a regular basis on the town website.

CAO Kathryn Ironmonger said something could be placed on the website homepage.
