Victoria Cross Public School held its first set of electives in April. Thank you to all the volunteers that participated in this event. Grade 4, 5, and some 6’s had the opportunity to try some different activities.
We had Lego with Kim Pendleton, who volunteered to make Lego creations with the kids in this activity, to encourage creativity and imagination! Police stations, trucks and house, these students made so many cool and creative builds it was hard to count! “I’m awesome at Lego!” said one student from this elective. This is truly a rule free activity.
Rooks, bishops and knights, this is the royalty of all games – Chess! This game requires intellect which is why Axy Leigh is teaching these boys how to play chess! One boy says “I think chess is pretty cool and I’d like to learn more, it’s really fun!”
Nicole West led some girls down the creative path of scrapbooking with family photo and fall fair fun! The girls in this elective worked on a family photo college and fun stuff for the upcoming fall fair this year.
Deer skin leather in hand, Raymond Langston helped the students make leather pouches. A student was asked what they thought of this activity, “I get to meet a lot of new friends and have lots of fun!!”
The students of woodworking made wonderful birdhouses. Bev Matherson and Dave Griffith and some help from some grade 8 boys, gave the students tips and safety hints in order to ensure these students had fun without getting hurt. “I like building the birdhouses, I would like to build by own house.” said one student.
At yoga the students practiced different techniques and positions and learned new stances. From meditating to calming music, Heather Reeves has taught these girls all they need to know. “What I like about yoga is it makes me feel happy and calm.”
Sonja Oakes taught the students just exactly how to make wallets and shoes out of… duct tape!! With many possibilities, the students had a blast!! “It’s really cool, I like doing the projects, and the designs are cool!!”
“Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the field…” Many kids love Sports, but in this group of electives, baseball is the most striking of them all!! With Scott Corrigan leading these kids to a home run. These kids practiced pitching, batting and making hitting sticks to encourage good Sportsmanship and team work. One students said “I really like batting, Mr Corrigan is a cool coach!!”
In web design, with Alicia Frey and helper Justin, they showed the students how to design a website and access it at home!! Awesome pictures and great captions, they were taught well and now they know what they are doing. “I did amazing stuff on it and my favourite part is being with friends, there really is a lot of things you can do with it!!”
Karen Sikkema read to students, made masks and did some acting. While listening to a story, the kids acted out things and showed many expressions. Masks were made as a fun drama related activity. “I love this craft and all the activities, I really like drama and acting!!”
Next year, Victoria Cross would like to hold electives again. If you would like to donate 1 hour a week of your time for approximately 6 weeks, with a talent to show, we are looking to expand into the grade 3 and 6 classes. Please call the school at your earliest convenience. If you have a talent to run outdoor Sports, cooking, sewing, dance, crafts, woodworking (we would like to run 2 classes) or anything else that you would like to share with our school kids, we would greatly appreciate it. I would like to once again say thank you to our volunteers for what you brought, definitely brought a smile to each one of our students… You are greatly appreciated!!
