Firearms charges laid

On May 18 at 3:18pm Dufferin OPP were dispatched to an address on 10th Line of Amaranth on a report of careless use of a firearm.

The property owner reported stray bullets had struck his residence and garage, including going through walls and windows. Police say preliminary investigation revealed six adults were discharging firearms on 9th Line of Amaranth and stray bullets struck the residence on the 10th Line.

As result of the OPP and Ministry of Natural Resources investigation, charges of careless use of a firearm have been laid against six people.

Nicholas Kelly, 50, and Chris Witter, 45, of Puslinch; as well as Daniel McNaughton, 27, and Danielle Ray of Guelph; Brett Miller, 23, of West Grey; and Gerald Rieger, 48, of Kitchener, were all arrested, charged and released on June 24.

The firearms were seized by police until the conclusion of the court proceedings.

Police remind firearms owners that when discharging firearms that they always have to be sure of the target and what is behind it and ensure that bullets land in safe area with a solid backstop.
