Eligible horses set for signature races

Lists are now available of horses eligible to start in the elimination dashes for Grand River Raceway’s 2014 signature races.

In February, the races received 183 nominations apiece – the second-highest nominee count in the histories of both events. During the April sustaining payment, 159 hopefuls remained eligible for the Battle of Waterloo, while 149 fillies maintained eligibility for the Battle Of The Belles.

Among the eligibles is Kloes Boy, a half-brother to 2013 Battle of Waterloo champ Three of Clubs. Trainer Gregg McNair of Guelph co-owns both horses with Tony Lawrence and hall of famer Keith Waples.

Bring on the Beach is another hopeful that’s sure to attract attention. He’s a full-brother of the prolific 2007 Battle of Waterloo winner and world champion, Somebeachsomewhere.

In the Battle of the Belles list, Terrorcam has strong family ties to the race. The Camluck filly is the first foal of Fbs Terror, winner of the inaugural edition of the Battle of The Belles in 2009.

The 17th annual Battle of Waterloo and 6th annual Battle of the Belles will be raced during the track’s annual Industry Day celebration on Aug. 4 at 1:30pm. The Battle of Waterloo final (for Ontario-sired two-year-old pacing colts) will be raced for an estimated $180,000. The Battle of the Belles (for Ontario-sired two-year-old pacing fillies) will be going for an estimated $120,000.

Elimination divisions for both races will be contested on July 28 at 6:30pm.
