Local students and police officers will hit the ice next month to raise funds and awareness for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
MADD Wellington County will host the second annual Kate McNally Memorial Student vs. Police Hockey Game at the Palmerston Community Centre on Feb. 18.
The game will feature a mixed team of Norwell District Secondary School students against a squad made up of Wellington County OPP and Guelph Police Service officers.
The event is held in memory of Kate McNally, a former Norwell student who was killed four years ago by a drunk driver.
Last year’s inaugural event raised over $1,200, the most ever for any MADD fundraiser in Wellington County. However, Kate’s mother, Lise McNally, a director of MADD Wellington County, says the game is largely about raising awareness of the organization in this area, particularly in the northern portion of the county.
“Actually I think it’s even more so our goal, because a lot of people don’t even realize MADD is in Wellington County,” she stated.
McNally said the game also helps build good relations between students and police.
Wellington OPP will be setting up a display featuring a police motorcycle, snowmobile and other equipment and local firefighters will have a fire truck on display at the game.
Admission is $5, with proceeds going to help MADD’s efforts to prevent drinking and driving. The puck drops at 7pm.
