A local group is hoping to set up a new soccer league here for women, starting this spring.
Sistas in Soccer is hoping to establish a league at the Royal Distributing Athletic Performance Centre in Marden every Sunday afternoon from the end of May until October.
“Sistas in Soccer is an outdoor recreational soccer league for women aged 18 and up,” spokesperson Christine Penny said in a press release.
“We have ladies in their 60s playing – isn’t that awesome? We are all ‘Sistas.’”
Penney explained all games are one hour long and no previous soccer experience is necessary.
There are no try-outs and all games will be played in Marden.
“We place around 24 ladies on each team. In keeping with the recreational side of sport, we don’t expect everyone to make it to every game,” Penny said.
“We are all busy women; if you have to miss some games due to work, vacation or family life situations, that’s okay – your team is designed to handle absences.”
Registration is $100 plus HST. Penny notes the cost includes a jersey, but players must supply their own soccer cleats, socks and shin guards.
“We have a lot of fun running this league, and that is also expressed in our crazy colour combinations for our jerseys,” said Penny.
“We try not to take ourselves too seriously; come have some fun with your girlfriends and meet some new great people who also enjoy Sports and socializing.”
Those interested can register online starting in February – as an individual or request to play with a group of friends.
