Council here has approved a recommendation from its economic development and planning committee to proceed with securing a location for a planned Creative Industry Incubator.
The Sept. 11 committee minutes, approved by council Oct. 1, contain a motion recommending “that a letter of intent to lease Unit 4 of 1 Elora Street North (Royal Plaza), Harriston” be sent to the building’s owner.
The motion also states that “a group of qualified community and municipal representatives be created to consider issues of implementation of the Creative Industry Incubator project.”
A business incubator assists start-up businesses during the first years by providing such services as affordable rental space, shared resources and management and organizational training.
The committee report notes existing tenants in the building offer expertise in web-based technology and paralegal services “that could provide incubator support through contract with the town.”
Electronic sign
Mayor George Bridge reported an electronic sign will soon be installed at the Harriston library.
A program will be set up through the library to allow community members to announce events on the sign.
Up in the air
Recreation services manager Matt Lubbers reported there has been an increase in use of radio-controlled airplanes and other aerial devices at the Palmerston fairgrounds.
At the Sept. 23 recreation committee meeting, Lubbers reported community members suggested forming a club for safety and insurance purposes and entering into an agreement with the town.
Lubbers told Minto Council on Oct. 1 the arrangement would allow for scheduling and prevent conflicts with other activities at the grounds, including soccer games.
Pickleball anyone?
Minto’s recreation department is offering residents a chance to try out a new sport.
Pickleball will be offered on a trial basis, Thursdays from Oct. 24 to Dec. 5 at Norwell District Secondary School.
The sport is a blend of tennis, badminton and table tennis.
Lubbers also reported the town will again offer its Grassroots Hockey program on Sundays at the Clifford arena. The program is geared toward youth between five and 14 who have not played hockey. All of the basics from learning how to skate, to passing and shooting the puck will be covered.
