President Bill Cheeseman was delighted to share the spotlight with youth and adult gardeners at the Clifford and District Horticultural Flower Show recently at the Community Centre in Clifford.
Six youth showed 66 exhibits ranging from fruits & vegetables and floral designs to photography. There was even a special project to research “Garden Visitors.”
Gardens were judged with Kaitlyn Densmore earning a first and Daniel Pfeffer a second in the 6-9 age category. The 10- to 16-year-old category was won by Becky Walters with Justin and Alyssa Casemore winning second and Steven Densmore earning a third.
Twenty adult exhibitors set out 229 displays of roses, gladiolus, cut flowers, grasses, potted plants, fruit, vegetables, designs, and photographs. The President’s Special was won by Carol Lange, with Jean Yenssen placing second. Doris Jaunzemis captured the most points in the Roses category and won a gift sponsored by Frances Newman. Carol Lange won a gift from Jean Yenssen for her photos. Yenssen also won the Design category and Cut Flowers with a gift donated by the Ontario Seed Company. Marion Pfeffer won the Gladiolus section and a gift donated by Larry Grummett Insurance. Isabel Senek had the most impressive grasses and won a prize from Paul Judge. Irene Judge and Karen Dowler tied for the most points in Potted Plants and won gifts donated by Blanche Freeman and Barb Harris. Carol Lange won the prize from Georgie and Bruce Hutchison for the most points in Fruits and Vegetables.
Close to 50 people arrived to view all the exhibits and most stayed to listen to guest speaker David Hobson, a gardening columnist for the Waterloo Region Record discuss ‘No petunias – a potpourri of the unique and unusual.
The flower show committee consists of Barbara Harris, Isabel Senek and Blanche Freeman.
All meetings are open to the public and memberships are available for $5 to help sustain the society. The next meeting will be held on Sept. 24. Don Sandke will present “Slides of Vietnam.”
The District 7 meeting will be held in Guelph on Oct. 26. In November, the final meeting of the year will be a Christmas potluck and awards banquet.
