Local storm chaser Dave Patrick is convinced two tornadoes touched the ground in the area on Sept. 1.
Patrick captured video at around 6pm of a tornado touching down in a field and bush south Fergus near the intersection of Sideroad 6 and the 2nd Line.
“It touched down, spun around a bit,” he said. “It wasn’t too terribly strong.” No damage was reported from the twister.
Patrick says he spotted a second tornado off Wellington Road 18 near Salem at around 6:30pm.
“It was basically a kilometre or two past Salem,” he said. “It touched down in a field and went across to the gorge.”
Patrick was unable to get a clear video shot of the second twister, which reportedly was captured by a second storm chaser.
At press time neither report was confirmed as a tornado by Environment Canada, and Patrick wouldn’t speculate on the strength of the twisters until they are confirmed.
If confirmed, they would be the third and fourth registered in Wellington County this season.
Earlier this summer two tornadoes were confirmed on separate occasions in Wellington North.
“Four tornadoes in the county is pretty high,” Patrick said.
He explained Wellington County typically sees one to two tornadoes per season.
